The range is from 100 FC to full sun. Palms living as understory plants in
dense jungles can take lower light levels, while palms growing in the open may
require a higher light level. Many palms prefer shade while young, and can
take full sun with age, as if they were emerging through the canopy of a native
forest or jungle. Please visit the individual palm’s page for detailed
information. |

Palms will beneifit from deep containers with excellent drainage always add extra
sand or perlite to a store bought mix to help increase drainage. The slower
a palm grows or the drier the area the palm is native to the more increased
drainage is needed. The pH is determined by the palm but most prefer to
have a slightly acidic soil. This is not true of all palms so double check
with that specific palm. When repotting make sure to go up only container
size or you could stunt your palms growth. |
Palms can be found growing in almost every tropical, subtropical, and even temperate
region around the world. |
Indoors Palms are best fertilized twice a year with a complete 6 month slow release fertilizer
(all micro-nutrients). Application rates will depend on the brand.
Light applications are best for indoor and shade plants. Outdoors 3-4 times per year is best with application months depending on where you live, usually Spring after the ground starts to warm up, summer, and fall. Broadcast the fertilizer evenly under the canopy, yet stay clear from the trunk. |
